Designer Ryota Iwai typically travels to locales as far-flung as Mongolia and Peru to see the cashmere and alpaca fibers he uses in his original fabrics being harvested. Having missed such trips abroad, Iwai wanted the spring collection to reflect a reconnection to the outdoors.
The look: After a subdued showing of neutrals last season, Iwai injected a burst of energy with vibrant shades of kelly, coral, sage and sky layered on top of soft creams and earthy browns into this coed collection. Ample cuts and soft-tailored pieces are paired with slender outerwear for added dimension, while boxy duck cloth shirts are constructed of Japanese Washi paper for a structured fit.
Quote of note: “Our thoughts and goals with what we want to do with the brand remain constant. It is like the next chapter of a book in the story we are telling, as opposed to a series of short stories each new season,” Iwai said. “We wanted to capture the radiance of being worn in natural sunlight and in natural settings; we are waiting for that moment and we hope the collection is read that way.”
Standout pieces: Velour trousers are a smart update to the stay-at-home comfort dressing of last year, while shaggy cardigans carry through a cozy feel. As always, Iwai’s outerwear is strong but not restrictive, and a peony pink version is the brightest spot in the collection.
