Ask any hard-core fashion girl in Copenhagen what local brand they love the most, and the answer will usually be a quick and emphatic “Ganni!” Ask any of the international editors, stylists, and buyers which brand they’re most impressed with in Copenhagen, and the answer will also be Ganni. What began as a simple knitwear brand has grown into a multi-million-dollar label with 22 of its own stores in Scandinavia and a spot on Net-a-Porter’s designer roster. Today’s Spring 2018 show was another step forward in Ganni’s rapid evolution. Creative director Ditte Reffstrup tapped the artist and New York cool girl Ana Kras to design the set, and the runway featured major models like Dilone and Frederikke Sofie.
Those names aside, the clothes are the true selling point for Ganni. They give a little bit of everything to everyone, and it’s well edited for sure—something many of the other Danish brands would do well to learn from. Dresses are Reffstrup’s sweet spot, especially her sweet floral-print styles that usually feature a ruffle or two. This collection had plenty of covetable frocks, some in pale yellow and with delicate embellishments and others stamped with micro blooms and accentuated with balloon sleeves. Then there were the raver looks with futuristic sunglasses, bright orange jackets, crop tops, bra tops, and super wide-leg, low-slung jeans. The denim was the cherry on top of the entire collection, created by Reffstrup in collaboration with specialty-denim maestros Bengt Thornefors and Christoffer Svensson. Remember JNCOs? Yeah, Ganni just went there. Those absurdly amazing giant pants will probably be everywhere in Copenhagen come spring and, at the rate the brand is going, probably everywhere in the world, too.
