Today’s Baum und Pferdgarten show was about as bright and bubbly as it gets. There were little pink cotton candy packages to go, a silver metallic runway, and front row tribes wearing bindis, big shades, and bright Balenciaga sock boots. The colorful tone of it all set the stage for a collection that had just as much pop and then some. The designers Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave tend to take things over the top, with flourishes like neon lace and leopard, and there was plenty of that in their Spring 2018 lineup.
While sweatshirts and tees that said “Silverlake” and featured a palm tree and flamingo motif felt a bit contrived, the collection was smartly toned down in parts. High points included a short-sleeve, drop-waist dress in both a blue cotton poplin and a Prince of Wales check; a pair of high-waist cutoff, dark blue jeans; and a yellow and blush pink top and trousers with a beautiful, subtle floral print. The sheer polka dot print and lightly hued dresses with slight ruffles at the waist were also nice. As they tend to do, Baumgarten and Hestehave gave each of their loyal followers exactly what they wanted. There was plenty to mix and match and play with. That’s the thing about Baum und Pferdgarten—no matter the hiccups in design or consistency, there’s always a lot of fun to be had with the clothes.
