There were copies of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet placed on the study tables that lined the Edna Barnes Salomon Room inside the New York Public Library. The classic, emotion-filled collection of essays that explore themes of loss, love, beauty, and spirituality was the starting point for Reem Acra’s Spring 2019 bridal collection. Models in voluminous ball gowns walked out one by one with baby’s breath flower crowns atop their heads, looking like the strong, regal angels that come to mind while reading Gibran’s words. This collection felt slightly grander than Acra’s last, especially considering a good portion of the looks were accented with full ball skirts. Bridal icons like Grace Kelly came to mind, mainly in the stunning, long-sleeved Victorian-style lace dress and another in subtle floral jacquard.
Of course, Ms. Acra also included her favorite intricate embroideries, some done on very sheer chiffon that felt a bit too sexy for this lineup of mostly classic wedding silhouettes. Overall, though, it was a dazzling array of dresses that felt like those dreamt up by little girls imagining their big day. It had all of the emotion, drama, and enchantment of The Prophet, and then some.
