Elie Saab is a designer known for intricate embellishments and grand silhouettes that give brides their princess moment. But where last season was pure opulence, Fall 2019 felt better suited to the Duchess of Sussex set. Streamlined gowns were peppered in with Saab’s signature details—lace, embellishments, waist-defining belts—and there was a new emphasis on transparency and symmetry.
One standout was a minidress and cape set, which marked Saab’s first short bridal dress. The frock’s simplicity was offset by the grandeur of the cape, which featured twinkling, jewellike accents that highlighted the skill of his atelier. Another prim, Kate Middleton–esque lace mini had a youthful vibrancy thanks to a clever twist on the once-ubiquitous overskirt trend: The longer skirt came with elegant floral appliqués, which lent an ethereal touch to the dress’s abbreviated length.
However, the star of the collection was an off-the-shoulder, bateau-neckline midi-length dress. Saab elevated the simple silhouette with yards upon yards of lace, which will envelope a bride in a fantastical, yet tailored confection. No doubt Meghan Markle would approve.
