“Selfishly, I design what I like,” says Deborah Sams from Bassike’s Sydney office. What Sams likes, lucky for us, is flattering trousers with a carefree flip. This season, she’s added color-blocked waves and a little extra motion to her hems, with lemon and azure trimming to spice up the look. Bassike’s beloved cargo pants, of course, continue, but this season is about pushing new ideas.
Newest are dresses and knitwear. The former are as flirty as ever, continuing the color-blocking and motion seen in this collection’s trousers. The Great Barrier Reef inspired Sams’s quest for vibrant hues and lively silhouettes. In “creating a shape I felt represented the billowing playfulness of the reef,” she said she found new ideas that will hopefully carry into future Bassike collections. Ditto for the crochet and fine knits. Few can make a chunky sweater as appealing as Bassike, but this season’s sinewy little halters and hip-hugging dresses open up the effortless, cool Bassike look to a new crop of customers trying to channel Sams’s Aussie ease.
