Relaxed luxury is a term you’ll hear a lot at Australian Fashion Week, and sister designers Genevieve and Alexandra Smart have really nailed down the look with their label, Ginger & Smart. For Resort 2017, the duo found inspiration in photographs of Earth from space, though you’d never guess the concept from the clothes themselves. Instead of a literal translation—save a few galaxy prints—the designers interpreted their theme through textural flourishes like lace in topography-like patterns, earthy woven raffia, and a palette that transitioned from optic white through a series of dusty blushes and beiges to end in black. The silhouettes were long and easy with the trendy flourishes you see all over Australian fashion at the moment, like too-long sleeves, asymmetric hems, and off-the-shoulder cuts.
Hidden underneath semi-sheer tunics was the pair’s new swimwear collection. The cross-front tops and cutout one-pieces are sure to find an audience in the many beach babes of Oz, though the Cristóbal Balenciaga–esque hats might be a tougher sell.
