“I. Love. This. Dress. Period. Full stop,” designer Andrea Lieberman says, referring to a black mini dress with on-trend puff-sleeves and rhinestone tubing along the rib cutouts. “I mean, come on. Does that not look like it’s so beautiful and luxury? It’s a $600 dress, but to me, honestly, it looks so expensive.” This sums up Lieberman’s feelings about her resort 2023 collection, rife with party dresses, unexpected suiting, and patterned swimwear.
A $600 dress is expensive, but less so than the four- or five-figure gowns other designers stock. As an advanced contemporary label opening a fifth store, Lieberman’s company wants to offer the woman who has money a flattering, stylish outfit at a lower price than what you’d get at a French maison. “That’s something that we as the design team put a lot of pride in, to offer these pieces that feel and look like they should be two and three times the price from a real designer, luxury brand,” Lieberman says, calling out the “weight and gravitas” of the fabric as exemplary of this philosophy.
The garments themselves toe the line between trendy and timeless. For every cutout at the waist, there’s a classic louche suit—which are special when rendered in a silky champagne fabric or a zingy green jacquard. The skirts are also strong. A cognac sequin skirt and a pleated silver vegan leather midi surely would work for a holiday party, but are more intriguing when worn with a chunky knit, as the metallic one is in the lookbook. Lieberman takes pride in designing for real women, and any of these outfits could be her go-to party look, whether it’s the magenta micro-mini that comes with shorts for modesty, or the metallic high neck bodycon dress glittering like a disco ball.
