Reem Acra has had a busy few months. This past week, first lady Jill Biden wore one of Acra’s intricately embroidered gowns to the Kennedy Center, and with the world opening up again, women are walking down the aisle, which means her bridal business is on the uptick. Acra didn’t skimp on red-carpet glamour for pre-fall, though it was more restrained than usual. Among the gem-encrusted numbers that Acra’s dedicated clientele tend to opt for were a fully embroidered clingy minidress and a glittering floor-length, strapless gown.
Some of the more eye-catching pieces here were almost demure. A magenta gown with bishop sleeves and cutouts had a refreshing retro touch—likewise a wrap dress with bejeweled sleeves that felt plucked out of the ’70s. One of the standouts was a ’60s caftan crafted from canary yellow mikado silk that fit loosely but remained body conscious. It said plenty without the over-the-top shine.
