The Bassike proposition is to make pieces that can inhabit people’s wardrobes for years. Creative director Deborah Sams might actually be too good at that: Bassike’s slouchy trousers, tailored jumpsuits, and chunky knits don’t need much seasonal updating. They are precisely the considered but comfortable pieces women are craving for work from home life.
But fashion demands newness. For spring 2021, Sams is offering a distilled and slightly elevated version of the Bassike basics. In a palette of earthy neutrals with the occasional digital-print tie-dye, the collection includes a sleeveless trench, linen coveralls, and plenty of crisp caramel cottons. “Wearable, everyday, and purposeful” is how Sams describes the lineup, which she designed during lockdown. It might not give you the thrill of one of the brand’s crisply tailored suits, but it is clothing to get the job done of living comfortably right now.
