A few of Reem Acra’s dresses have already sold from her Resort 2020 collection. Her business has a very tapped-in customer base. Women are obsessed with Acra’s glitzy way of supplying megawatt Hollywood appeal. This season, she took her signature shimmer into a disco-boho sphere, churning out gowns that were both slinky and frothy. For example, one cape made of tulle was dotted with a constellation of sequins and had blush pink ostrich feathers that cut diagonally across. (It made for the perfect shoulder cover-up.) A turtleneck dress was completely slathered in silver sequins for that Diana Ross appeal, with streams of tulle tacked from the waist to the hem to add some wild-card curve.
Acra has a huge market within the Middle East, so many of these gowns skewed modest, with long sleeves and lengthy skirts. While she does create those showy, skin-baring numbers, she was one of the first designers to work in the modest world in a modern way, long before the concept was pushed commercially. The best example of this here was a layered, long-sleeve lavender dress, dotted with crystals within a gem-checked outline pattern. Don’t be surprised if that look gets snapped up shortly, too.
