At its core, Galvan is a label focused on eveningwear and cocktail attire, anchored by popular slinky slip dresses in a range of colors and fabrics. Galvan鈥檚 design directors, Anna-Christin Haas and Sola K谩rad贸ttir, and their two cofounders have achieved success with this aesthetic formula, which appeals not only to women looking for wedding or black-tie attire at a competitive price point but also to those walking the red carpet.
In recent seasons, the brand has expanded into the separates category, offering blouses that can be worn with jeans and trousers or paired with casual T-shirts. Despite the internal dedication to its hits, Galvan never feels too repetitive or one-note, and that鈥檚 because Haas and K谩rad贸ttir are experts at making minor but significant tweaks with her form-flattering designs.
For Resort, Haas and K谩rad贸ttir incorporated interesting textures and prints, including a shimmery watercolor floral motif. There was also a black-and-white abstract pattern meant to evoke the spirit of dance, specifically the choreography of Pina Bausch. Haas and K谩rad贸ttir interpreted Bausch鈥檚 work not only in prints but also via pleating, ruffles, and skirt panels. Their idea was to emphasize fluidity and motion. From the tops with bell sleeves to the twirl-ready dresses, this is a collection made for the dance floor.
Where Haas and K谩rad贸ttir perhaps went too far was in her use of flashy silver, black, and gold sequins, which sent the mind to Studio 54 instead of, say, the stage at Lincoln Center. Otherwise, there is a fine and noticeable evolution here.
