Wouldn’t it be nice to fly under the radar? It seems impossible these days given that we’re collectively attached to our devices more than ever. Speaking over the phone from Australia, Camilla Freeman-Topper mused about an alternate unconnected universe. Not long ago, at the start of the design process for Camilla and Marc’s prefall 2020 collection, she and her brother Marc Freeman got to thinking about this anonymous quote they’d found: “I just want to go somewhere where nobody knows my name.”
Freeman and Freeman-Topper conjured a lineup of clothes that are, as she said, “meant for the wearer, no one else.” Simplicity, anonymity, minimalism were words that she used frequently, discussing her clean, well-tailored separates. The cocooning, futuristic silhouettes of dresses and coats gave off a protective armor-like feel, while the rich wrinkled organza fabric and thick, bonded black velvet added depth and texture.
This season saw a step forward at Camilla and Marc in terms of elevation and sophistication. Tailoring at an approachable, smart price point is really the thing here. The clothes stand out, as minimally minded as the aesthetic may be. They’re right for the way women are dressing right now, tending toward timelessness and wearability and strength.
