Now that Each x Other has completed its first seven-year cycle—yes, numerology matters—designers Ilan Delouis and Jenny Mannerheim are ready to step toward broader horizons. To that end, New Age: A Revolutionary Solar Future was not so much as a collection as a “visual manifestation” for Spring. Semantic studies aside, the point is: It’s not just about the clothes and the mirror-finish sunglasses by Poppy Lissiman. But first, the rainbow connection: Backstage, the duo noted that the Each x Other woman has evolved and, with the benefit of a new logo and a rebooted DNA, the brand has, too.
They meant that literally—crystallized by a prismatic opening suit and, later in the lineup, an iridescent perfecto. They also meant it figuratively: An “altruistic collaborative concept” is being tailored to the brand’s new phase of oneness and deeper meaning—Delouis hinted it would involve “creativity, charity, and the law of attraction” (stay tuned for more on that one).
“It’s a really happy collection; there are lots of girls smiling,” Mannerheim said. As is their wont, they put that sentiment into words on the back of one jacket: “We are the rainbow in each other’s cloud.” Often, that came with a cloudburst of strass fringe cascading from sporty stripes on tracksuits, tops, and skirts.
They also reached out to the German abstract painter Alina Birkner to design holographic prints on T-shirts and long jersey dresses, for example. Backstage, the artist noted that the California Light and Space movement has always been a source of inspiration for her.
Throughout, there was a salute to disco-fabulous style (with musical backup by Donna Summer), although the duo prefers the term “retro-futuristic.” Some of those pieces might be fun for a night; others, like the catsuit, tilted a little too far toward Vegas.
But that’s part of the vibe—Each x Other is out to speak to women of all stripes. Even someone who actually remembers disco might just find a clean-cut suit or a relaxed, draped, and shirred dress to take her wherever she wants to go.
