In the denim world, it’s rare to be truly surprised. So much has already been done—and often overdone. On any given shopping site, you’ll find vintage-inspired rigid jeans next to milennial pink jeans, shredded jeans, leopard-spotted jeans, super-flared jeans, ruffle-hem jeans, and virtually everything in between. But Scott Morrison’s new 3x1 collection has one pair you really, actually won’t see anywhere else: Dubbed the Porter, it’s a cropped wide-leg jean with “wings”—two panels of denim draped around the sides. You can pin them in the front, as shown here, or unbutton them and cinch the panels in the back. Call it a skirt/jean hybrid, or a twist on a utility apron, or just an extra-pleated jean; whatever it is, Morrison is confident it will stand out in the “novelty” market
Admittedly, they’re not for the faint of heart—we can only picture true denimheads giving the Porter a go—so you’re more likely to see girls stocking up on Morrison’s other new jean: a high-rise, full-length bootcut style. Cropped and frayed denim has been trending for years now, to the point where Morrison joked he couldn’t sell a pair with longer than a 27-inch inseam. But he believes we’re moving in a sleeker, perhaps more androgynous, direction. These longer jeans are still sexy, but they’re meant to be a little looser than your vintage cigarette pair, so they feel more like men’s jeans in that way. At the same time, the full-length inseam—likely around 32 inches—demands a precise, tailored fit. Most women will need to get them hemmed to the perfect length, and others will wear them with a high heel. (Dare we say the jeans-and-heels trend is primed for a comeback?)
Other highlights for Resort included vibrant shibori-dyed jeans and button-downs; a pair of charcoal jeans with hook-and-eye details running down the sides; and an expansion of Morrison’s successful ribbed knits. The short-sleeved henleys and ruffle-trim turtlenecks are an ideal complement to his novelty jeans, but they looked elegant with chinos, velvet pants, and bootcut styles, too.
