For Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman, Pre-Fall 2019 is about looking into a future far in advance of when the collection will actually arrive in stores. Their inspiration, as Freeman-Topper explained over the phone from her native Australia, was the loss of human connection in an alternate society driven by technology. Though this place doesn’t exist quite yet, we’re all certainly obsessed with our digital devices, so much so that we often forget to interact with one another outside of text messages and Instagram DMs.
In order to bring some awareness back to our own bodies, the designers utilized cocoon-like shapes in dresses, coats, and knitwear. The collection was tactile, especially when it came to a beautifully designed transparent nylon top with a wool rib knit. A slim three-piece suit made with a velvet micro herringbone was also a fine example of the strong, deliberate tailoring that’s getting better and better each season at Camilla and Marc.
The outerwear was sculptural and chic, as was a diaphanous red gown that looked as though it might move in fluid waves around the body. This was by far one of the duo’s most artistic and technically-savvy collections.
