Back in 2011, when T by Alexander Wang launched, athleisure as a category didn’t exist. Sweatshirts were for sweating and loungewear was for lounging. Over the past six years, slouchy staples have surpassed “real” fashion to become the dominant trend in the market—so much so that Alexander Wang’s main line shows are now filled with hoodies, track pants, and running shoes. For Resort 2018, the designer took T by Alexander Wang back to its roots, offering comfortable, simple clothes, no strings attached. Okay, some strings attached, but they’re only for ruching that T-shirt into a crop top.
This Resort collection might be Wang’s most practical yet. Jeans and cut-offs are backed in cozy sweatshirt material and utilitarian cargo pants allow for snapping and unsnapping, depending on the activity at hand. T-shirts are outfitted with long ties around the torso, so you can style them as you wish, and thin ribbed crop tops can be worn either forward or backward, with their hook-and-eye closures sexily undone. And if you really want to reach some hygge levels of snuggliness, there’s an oversize jumpsuit made of sweatshirt fabric. In black (what else?), it looks superbly cool styled on Sarah Brannon in the lookbook, but a real-world Wang Gang member could pull it off with similar aplomb, or at least dare to try. In an age of supreme comfort, where Uggs and Crocs are suddenly cool, a Wang-approved onesie just makes sense. Now, where’s the long-sleeved version?
