Browsable and buyable right now at MatchesFashion.com, Net-a-Porter, Neiman Marcus, MyTheresa, Farfetch, and more, this Resort collection from Alexa Chung and her team has been dropping here, there, and everywhere for most of the month—so, it’s kind of a little old. Yet its formal editorial embargo only lifts now, the closer to coincide with a launch shindig in East London, which makes it super-new! Add the fact that this third Chung collection is explicitly informed by some of the key performers and looks from mid-’90s Brit-pop—thus it’s kind of ancient—and you’re looking at clothes with more competing timelines than Back to the Future.
Titled Fantastic, the collection features sweats and tees emblazoned with that word in a cursive font in the style of that on Elastica’s eponymous debut album cover. Totally on purpose, the parkas were a little bit Gallagher brothers, the leather necklaced silver cigarette pack charms a little Damon Albarn, the art scruff knits a little Graham Coxon, and the large-wale suiting and check outerwear a little Jarvis Cocker (plus those HardCore tees, too). These cameo references peppered a selection of less literal wearable mood music that covered Glastonbury athleisure (rainbow-detail hoodies and track pants), ’90s sirenwear (cutely gathered metallic dresses and shirting), and Camden kicks (stacked 18-hole boots). This collection played like a passionately assembled mixtape that blended nailed-on floor fillers (ruffled shirting, triple-stitch denim) with more seasonally experimental B sides and remixes: worth putting on, whenever.
