At a time when trend has become sort of a dirty word, there’s less talk about what’s “in” and “out” and more emphasis on standout items and personal touches. You can get away with wearing a sweatshirt one day, a crisp suit the next, and a long floral dress later in the week and never feel like you’re doing too much. That’s good news for Amy Smilovic, whose Tibi girl is just as game to try a baggy plaid trouser as she is a wild print, a raw denim trench, or a kitten-heeled cowboy boot, all of which featured prominently in the new Pre-Fall collection.
Like much of fashion right now, there were hints of Demna Gvasalia’s influence here in the blown-up paisleys and checkered duffels. But the bigger message was one about simple, no-fuss dressing. A few looks were made up of just two or three items: See the pink V-neck sweater and cherry pants, the lilac sherpa and jeans, and the drapey sweatshirt tucked into a pencil skirt. Those items will be palate cleansers when they hit stores next summer. They also helped highlight a few new shoes, a category Smilovic is excited to expand. Along with the cowboy boots, there were jewel-toned pointy pumps—high ones!—and PVC sandals to change into when you’re on the go.
