Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs took their Pre-Fall collection on a little field trip. They usually photograph and present in-studio during the pre-collection season, but today everything was set up inside the window-lined top floor of the New Museum. It made sense, as the designers point to iconic artists as their main sources of inspiration; this lineup was influenced by the work of three of them: Henri Matisse, Sol LeWitt, and Richard Serra. The choice to look at these particular artists wasn’t at all surprising either: Filled with curvaceous lines and cut-outs, their work is more than on point with the slick aesthetic of the label.
The designers interpreted the artists’ signatures nicely, with embroidered multicolored sequins and fringe detailing on tops and suiting—the motif was meant to recall LeWitt’s Vertical Brushstrokes painting. Also eye-catching was the new custom, Matisse-esque metalwork that held cut-outs together on pretty jewel-toned dresses. Cushnie et Ochs never ventures too far from its familiar figure-flattering silhouettes, but today, in that airy space on top of the contemporary art museum, there was definitely a fresh feel to the clothes.
