Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman may have gone the anti-political route for Spring, but their newest collection is somewhat tinged with symbolism. Power suits of the 1930s, those made famous by the likes of Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich, inspired the Pre-Fall wares at Camilla and Marc. The designers wanted to highlight the idea behind these women challenging gender norms—an extremely relevant and important topic right now. They did this successfully with their lineup of checked and herringbone trousers, blazers, and trenches, all sharply tailored with just the right balance of masculine and feminine.
While these pieces were desirable, some of the straightforward floral prints dresses, which could have been plucked straight from any closet in the ’20s or ’30s, weren’t as appealing. Elsewhere, a floor-length red Lurex velvet gown felt unnecessarily dramatic. Overall, however, Camilla and Marc had a fine offering of separates for any strong, stylish woman to wear, including versatile denim and lovely day-to-night tops.
