From the beginning, MSGM has been about unexpected mashups. Massimo Giorgetti arrived on the scene as street style photography was exploding, and the cameras loved his combo platter approach to fashion. This season, he took to mixing biker shorts with ruffled shirts and sashes; flyaway track pants with argyle sweaters; and striped sports jerseys with halters of yet more ruffles made from openwork knits. Giorgetti is savvy to trends, and he landed on two of fashion's current obsessions here: athleisure on the one hand and girly ruffles on the other.
This collection had energy to spare, with bold colors that called to mind sports uniforms and more of the fruit prints that have been popping up elsewhere—cherries, bananas. But the union didn't always click. Those ruffled halters looked a little silly, and the stretchy bandeaus tied around crisp cotton button-downs worn with airy pleated skirts were perhaps superfluous to needs, especially considering his message backstage. Talking about the MSGM girl, he said, "She loves to go fast." If that's really the case, he conveyed it best with a pair of looks that combined those cool track pants and simple cotton shirts given interesting volumes by multiple toggled drawstrings. We might've reached peak mashup; Giorgetti could consider simplifying. He has a hit on his hands with his neon neoprene trainers.
