Considered is a good word to describe Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen’s collections for The Row, and in the past few seasons, that’s been the case for Elizabeth and James, too. A serene simplicity has taken hold at the label, which sits on the advanced contemporary floor and stands out next to competitors that grapple with trends. Instead of giving in to a current mood or must-have, the Olsens are committed to a minimal, restrained aesthetic marked by luxurious fabrics. If something doesn’t feel essential, they cut it, and that resonates with women who crave an unencumbered lifestyle.
For Resort, that came through in the snug ribbed-knit sweaters (some with scooped-out backs), poplin dresses, and floor-skimming skirts, all in a clean palette of cream, beige, and cinnamon. But the Olsens also incorporated a few unexpected details plucked from their expansive collection of vintage clothing and accessories. There were slip dresses and bed jackets in lush saffron velvet; glossy croc-embossed bags; and flashes of shimmer, as in a glinty champagne dress and a cocoon coat in the faintest shade of blush satin. That coat especially felt like something Ashley or Mary-Kate would wear—it was louche and casual but ladylike, too.
