The word rockers surely conjures up familiar visions, but as Jade Lai imagined it for Resort, it was quite a different thing altogether. The Creatures of Comfort designer was referencing the 1978 reggae film Rockers, shot in Kingston and brimming over with stylistic appeal. It primarily informed Lai where color was concerned, yielding a juicy, getaway-ready palette of reds, yellows, and pinks. This felt like a notable departure from Creature of Comfort’s typically Manhattanite color schemes, strong on blacks and more muted shades. It was a lovely one, though, echoing a bit of the bravado synonymous with reggae style; it didn’t take any deep thinking to see why that scene so inspired Lai.
The resulting clothes were an easy breath of fresh air, offbeat looks created with an emphasis on layering. Indeed, it was one of Creatures’s more playful outings. Take the crinkly, irregularly pleated dress in hues of lemon and rose; at first it appeared to be a crop top and skirt, but on closer inspection, the two pieces were connected by suspenders for a subtle flash of skin. Even items that seemed tricky on paper—i.e., a zip-front denim bustier—were rendered cool in practice, alongside a smattering of truly must-have shoes and bags from Creatures’s rapidly growing leather goods business.
