Lately, there has been a lot of talk about streamlining our wardrobes. Maybe it’s a reaction to the piled-on eclecticism that’s been trending for a few seasons, or it’s the rapid-fire pace of the fashion calendar, or a mix of both. Nowadays, finding the perfect dress or pair of jeans feels like a bigger win than scoring the new must-have runway accessory, because those are pieces you can rely on and enjoy for seasons to come. Anthony Melillo approaches his ATM collections with a similar attitude, particularly for Resort.
Micro-modal ribbed T-shirts and cashmere sweaters are ATM’s bread and butter, and Melillo has been expanding into suiting and day-to-night dresses. The idea of finding the perfect T-shirt is mirrored in those other categories: “What would the perfect light jacket look like?” he mused. “Or the perfect shirtdress?” His answers this season: a cool camp jacket that came in navy or khaki and a striped silk shirtdress. “These are pieces that you buy because you instantly love them,” he said. “They aren’t overdesigned or complicated. If you have this perfect jacket or dress, you really don’t need another one.”
The T-shirts, though, are worth stocking up on, and Melillo keeps a constant rotation of “core” pieces in stock 24-7 so you can pick up a sweatshirt or ribbed bodysuit whenever you please. In that sense, ATM was kind of ahead of the see-now-buy-now curve; the items aren’t exactly limited edition, but if a girl sees one that she likes on Instagram, she can easily get her hands on it.
