Known for her megawatt Hollywood gowns, Reem Acra has been slowly shifting the focus of her collections to attract a new generation of customers, mostly by introducing a range of separates. So far, she has been successful: Recently Net-a-Porter started carrying Acra’s designs for the first time. In addition to showcasing her signature gowns, Net-a-Porter is selling her horsehair-sculpted, couture-finished lace tops.
Acra continued with the theme of separates for her Pre-Fall collection. A gold lace maxi skirt and its matching sleeveless crop top with baroque embellishments can be worn as a set or in a more casual manner. Pre-Fall is also a season that aligns with awards shows, meaning that Acra didn’t forget her red carpet customer either. Standouts included a black gown with a belt of gold embellishments and a sleeveless fuchsia dress. Some of the silhouettes mirrored the pieces from her last bridal collection, like a slate gray dress with dropped sleeves. Still, Acra’s introduction of separates was the smartest move: Whether or not Zendaya, Rowan Blanchard, and the rest of this generation’s up-and-comers want to wear a gown or a lace crop top with its matching skirt—or with denim jeans—Acra is giving them a choice.
