Here’s an argument for ignoring that see-now-buy-now thing: Sally LaPointe’s fur-trimmed sweaters, which put her name on the map and are frequently worn by Kendall Jenner, often sell out no matter what season it is. Women buy them in August and December, and if they can’t get their hands on one, they’ll call LaPointe to put in a request. As it turns out, we actually can justify a truly amazing, gotta-have-it piece even if we won’t be able to wear it for a few more months.
For Pre-Fall, which will hit stores in June, there were fur sweaters aplenty. In past collections, the silhouettes were quite simple and polished, like a boxy turtleneck or classic crew. This season, LaPointe added something new to the mix: a fur-trimmed hoodie. “I can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner,” she said. Hoodies have been trending for a few seasons now, but they’re a departure for LaPointe; her collections have never exactly been “sporty.” Knit from a super-luxe wool (not cotton terry) and just a touch oversize, they tap into the athleisure trend without taking it too far.
They’re also exactly what Jenner and her friends might wear with skinny jeans and thigh-high boots. You have to wonder if LaPointe had that in mind. Also very Kendall: a cropped sweater with baroque embellishments along the yoke, styled with matching knit pants with bejeweled cuffs. Somehow, the pants didn’t look strictly millennial; her tony clients at Bergdorf Goodman might wear them for a transatlantic flight with ballet flats and a cashmere sweater.
The sport references turned up elsewhere, like on a sequined suit with ticking stripes down the sides. But as always, LaPointe’s exquisite, hand-beaded evening looks were more captivating. A body-skimming gown with squares of bronze, black, and white sequins looked like a Klimt painting, and she likened a sheer black duster and sequined trousers to “the new evening pantsuit.” It would be a stunner of a red carpet choice for a celebrity of any age.
