Twin Peaks freaks are counting the days until Showtime begins airing a new 18-episode series of David Lynch’s groundbreaking ’90s TV show. The debut is May 21, for those not yet in the know. Massimo Giorgetti was a teenager when the original two seasons aired, and he was “obsessed,” he confirmed backstage, especially with Sherilyn Fenn and Lara Flynn Boyle’s characters. This writer was a Mädchen Amick girl.
Over the four weeks in January that he worked on his Fall collection, Giorgetti made a study of the show’s symbols and reproduced many of them in the new collection. The pine trees and owl on a poster announcing the 2017 series—“25 years later it is happening again”—turned up as prints on loose-fit sheaths and as sequin embroideries on oversized varsity jackets. More obscurely, the tile in a restroom scene (starring Fenn) formed the graphic zigzag seen on everything from plissé skirts to rabbit fur coats, while tulle prom skirts were a nod to dead homecoming queen, Laura Palmer. There were blue roses on Giorgetti’s mood board and rose motifs on silk and velvet dresses. According to the Twin Peaks Wiki—yes, it exists—a “blue rose case” was the code word for a special FBI case investigated by agents Dale Cooper and Chester Diamond. The more you know...
None of these connections were particularly obvious. But they were the better part of a mix that put a heavier-than-usual emphasis on logos and also included outliers in the form of faded denim and strict pinstripes. At least according to this Twin Peaks fan.
