Earlier this summer, Stella McCartney showed her mainline Resort ’18 collection in a Chelsea garden, a sweet setting for her tropical suits and draped knit dresses. There were also a few items from her Fall ’17 Adidas lineup in the mix: a brand-new Adidas Ultra Boost sneaker and backpack made from Parley ocean plastic yarn, a fabric that is composed of plastic debris found in the ocean, proceeds of which will benefit the marine conservation nonprofit Sea Shepherd. Even cooler? Parley’s Cyrill Gutsch and Sea Shepherd’s Captain Paul Watson were both in attendance. McCartney also gave them a first glimpse at the hero look from her Adidas collection: a vibrant photo-printed jacket and matching shorts, both made from a superlight 100 percent recycled polyester. McCartney has used recycled poly in the past, but it typically only accounted for a percentage of a jacket or a pair of leggings; now that she’s mastered fully recycled garments, you can expect to see more of them in future Adidas collections and maybe even her mainline.
Another point of crossover between McCartney’s ready-to-wear and Adidas collections were the pieces in blown-up check, lifted from her Spring ’16 runway, and the super-bold colors. She made the case for wearing a cropped raspberry sweatshirt with orange high-rise leggings for yoga and slipping on a pair of ’90s-throwback Adidas Climalite slides in neon yellow post-workout. For those with subtler tastes, there was also a lot of rose and dusty clay—a softer take on “millennial pink.” Her new and noteworthy shoe was a black and gold Lurex running sneaker with an ankle-high sock built in; it will provide extra stability and support, particularly for runners with weak ankles, but will look cool on the street, too. McCartney has said she would never compromise style for sport, and those shoes were a reliably strong mix of function and fashion.
