For the casual follower, tracking the changes at 6397 might be something of a tall order. After all, Stella Ishii and her team are hell-bent on making the best basics in the biz, and basics in the truest sense of the word: T-shirts, jeans, sweaters, et al. But to get up close and personal with the pieces, the incremental changes from season to season are a joy to behold.
For Resort, Ishii and co. set their sights on spring-y pieces like a sweet silk blouse and a lineup of lush cashmere, off-pastel bikini tops, and boy shorts. Previously the brand has eschewed much in the way of tailoring, because as Ishii tells it, you can't do really great, proper tailoring in New York at the 6397 price point. Bearing that in mind, the past few seasons have seen the brand introducing slouchier, throw-on versions of suiting pieces, like Resort's shawl-collar blazer with a single button and swingy silhouette. It was stunning in cream and easy to see teamed with one of the grunged-up chambray shirts. Then, of course, there were the returning fan favorites of the lineup, like the Bey-approved boilersuit. Between those and the new additions—like those cashmere underpinnings—it's more than enough to keep customers coming back season after season.
