The elegance and control of judo was the order of the day for Camilla and Marc designers Camilla Freeman Topper and Marc Freeman this season. The duo channeled that simple brand of precision to create a lineup essentially free of excess, clothes pared back to their leanest essence. Consider the appeal of crisp cotton trenches and shirting, or the beautiful graphic slash of belts, a 21st-century take on the obi that served to highlight the nipped waists on styles like clingy little sheath dresses.
A certain monastic quality was tangible in softly fraying rust-color hessian separates. The pair’s knitwear echoed that, with its cool, dry hand feel and unfinished edges. One plunging tunic in particular underscored the balance of polished and raw. Where they did turn up, though, the extravagances here felt considered, like an off-shoulder gown in midnight blue dévoré, or a light, unfussy lace overdress that called to mind the cross section of a lotus root.
