A visit to Dia:Beacon informed Jasmin Shokrian's Spring lineup, in particular the works of Robert Ryman and Agnes Martin that she discovered there. Shokrian is based in L.A., and there's an obvious link between the city's dressed-down culture and her untailored forms. Her shirtdresses acknowledged the body without encroaching upon it, and she regulated the trapeze volume of a silk faille top by suspending it from two delicate strings. That faille is a solid material, even when shown in a foamy blue, but overall Shokrian is interested in lightness. Gauzy windowpanes inserted into a cotton dress and semicircular hemlines on shorts echoed the geometries she pursued in her new T-shirts, the standout of which featured a Malevich-sized square in gold foil. The tees have become a major component of her business, but Shokrian seemed especially enthusiastic about her new tote in football mesh or canvas. Look closely at the double-strapped carryall. If it reminds you of an oversize shopping bag from your favorite box store, well, its name is Aeki.
