Marc by Marc Jacobs is a shopper's collection, so for Resort, the label didn't dream up a fantasy getaway. Its feet are planted firmly in buy now, wear now. For its first deliveries in November, MMJ has cozy pieces—affordable faux furs and shearlings, puffers stitched with houndstooth patterns—and pieces that just look cozy: those same houndstooths, a touch point for this collection, digitally printed on silk and woven into jacquard and layered like on like. By the time December brings its holiday get-togethers to town, Marc by Marc has party looks in stark black and white: a tux jumpsuit here, a polka-dot blouse there. (A blush-pink tuxedo provided a nice break.) For the New Year, saturated red and fuchsia set the tone, with kick skirts and cute floral-printed day dresses.
There were smart pieces throughout—a faux-fur bomber dotted with rosettes, the dégradé sequin print on a puffer vest—but the real buzz at the label is the recent announcement that its longtime accessories consultant, Katie Hillier, is taking the reins as creative director, and bringing in the much-loved London designer Luella Bartley to work on it, too. This wasn't their work. But as a tribute to some of MMJ's enduring favorites—polka dots, poppy brights, et al.—it shored up the blocks they'll build upon.
