Jean Paul Gaultier has always advanced his unique vision of the world by incorporating design trademarks from his past into current collections. This season he made it official; alongside his regular pre-fall offerings, he celebrated his new partnership with Gibo with a "Re-Edition" capsule of greatest hits. A double-breasted camel coat with molded neoprene padding at the hips, for example, was a reissue from the Fall ’87 "Forbidden Gaultier" collection, while his infamous garbage-bag dress from 1980 was updated here in soft leather.
The pre-fall pieces emphasized asymmetry and deconstruction—favorite JPG themes. Pinstriped suits were cut in half so jackets had just one sleeve and pants came with only one leg. New overskirts, held up by wires that reached around three-quarters of the model's waist, and biker jackets with corsetry details would both fit in with the collectibles traveling the world as part of an ongoing Jean Paul Gaultier retrospective. The exhibition arrives at the Brooklyn Museum this October.
