Basketball players and cheerleaders. Nobody could've predicted it from the duo behind Versus, Donatella Versace and Christoper Kane. Do they even have basketball courts in Glasgow, Kane's hometown? There was one laid out at Versace's Via Gesù palazzo tonight. The foul lines were painted in ice-cream colors—lilac, pink, mint green, palest yellow-—that were then echoed in the clothes. Versace and Kane turned basketball jerseys into tank dresses piped in black. Warm-up jackets and pants were cut from black leather and peekaboo chiffon, respectively. If the silhouette was sporty, the results were polished. You'll never see a hooded sweatshirt more pristine than theirs.
On the cheerleader side of the line were pastel dresses shimmying as the models stalked down the runway in strappy patent leather heels. Cutouts, not unlike those at Kane's signature show in London, appeared here and there—at the shoulders or the ribs. Last season, the label's black dresses with mesh insets at the midriff became a mini red-carpet phenomenon. This collection was lobbed more in a daywear direction. With the Versus license now back in team Versace's hands, it makes sense to push the bounds of this revived line. Score one for Christopher and Donatella.
