At Sonia Rykiel, it has always been about piling on those signature knits. There was a comfortable familiarity to pre-fall—with an emphasis on comfort. Easy layering options like a pair of slightly baggy leggings cut from a light voile explain why sales at the house soar when temperatures drop, and a pillowy coat in double-faced tweed with magenta lining is the closest we'd come to wearing a Snuggie out in public. The label has forever featured details like seams on the outside of garments (Madame Rykiel pioneered the technique back in the day) and pockets everywhere. Hoods popped often in this collection, too, notably on a tie-front cape.
The one snag with all this layer play is the possibility of crossing into "man repeller" domain—a girlish figure can get lost forever under stacks of sweaters. But peel off the coat, cardigan, and snood, and you'll find flirty pieces like a trompe l'oeil silk shift with mixed stripes and cutout shoulders, or a striped sweater dress with a plunging neckline designed to catch glances.
