Like his female counterpart, the Marc by Marc Jacobs guy is an expert at afterthought cool. He layers short- over long-sleeve tees, stripes atop checks, clashing and complementary colors, and it all comes out looking—well, like a young, energetic, casually great outfit. Jacobs doesn't push his taste for contrasting patterns and colors quite so far with the men's collection; the wildest combination was a pink top with lemon-yellow trousers, and he kept to one print per outfit. But he's bringing the same new, blousy volume that he did for women into this as well, showing loose shirts and oversize Henleys meant to drape over the waistband of slouchy cargo shorts and jeans, or generously cut Macs and trenches that could keep the rain off the whole family. In the wrong hands, all this fabric, texture, and pattern might look like the bottom of the laundry basket; here, it's an exercise in carefree chic.
