An enfilade of stretchy knits in jewel tones was an effective piece of showmanship, but the real news in this Spring collection was in the combo of tailoring with stretch fabrics, and in what we’d refer to today as its athleisure touches. Included in a “Fashion & Fitness” story for Vogue’s April 1990 issue was a photograph of Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista in what looked like beach-ready looks; in fact they were wearing “body suits that look like bathing suits but aren’t meant to go in the water.” They were splashy styles nonetheless.
