Spurred by the luminous works of Flemish still-life master Jan Frans van Dael, Camilla Freeman-Topper imagined a rough-edged sort of placidity. That aesthetic isn’t untrod territory for Aussie mainstay Camilla and Marc, but its designer reworked it in winning, summery ways. The airy layers and featherweight volumes are well suited to the transitional expects of Resort. At yesterday’s preview, Freeman-Topper herself sported one of this season’s swingy tops in a shorn cotton and silk organza stripe. She teamed it with a long-sleeved poplin top and razor-sharp bouclé trousers, but it would have just as easily paired with denim cutoffs; those summer, semi-sheer stripes turned up as handkerchief-hemmed skirts and maxi dresses, too.
The best styles among this offering were those whipped up in unexpectedly luxe-feeling tones of olive and cinnamon. Take the strong waxed raffia story, particularly Resort in feel; a blazer with an open, lace-up back was one of the strongest pieces of the bunch.
